Baroclinic Instability Experimenting with the apparatus at hand

Water tank A wash basin, a cookie tin and a green tea container (cylinder) stacked together. The diameter of the cookie tin: 16.5cm The diameter of the tea container: 7.5cm The base of the cookie tin was insulated with polystyrene foam. Working fluid Water   Visualization The temperature distribution at the base of the water tank was made visible using liquid crystal sheet. The flow of the water was made visible using aluminium powder. Photography was done with a stationary camera using strobe photography.   Experimental process A temperature difference was created by pouring hot water in the wash-basin and ice water in the tea container. The tank was placed on the rotating table and turned in a clockwise direction.
