In 1893 the Norwegian adventurer Nansen loaded 6 years' supply of food and 8 years' supply of fuel on the specially made ship Fram3), and left Oslo port, heading for the North Pole. Incredibly, his plan was to let his ship be frozen into the ice when the Arctic Sea froze, and drift with the ice, letting it carry him to the North Pole. As Nansen drifted according to plan in the Arctic Sea, he noticed something unusual. The ship did NOT drift downwind. It always drifted about twenty to forty degrees to the right of the wind's direction.
